Q&A time with Modestep!
After soundtracking the summer, Modestep are hitting Freeze where they play the Energy Sessions stage sponsored by Relentless Energy Drink on Saturday 29th October. We caught up with them before they head to Battersea Power Station!
Your video for Sunlight features lots of OAPs getting up to mischief... Is that your plan for the future?!
We think our entire generation are going to be like that! I don't think any of us plan to be like that when we're older, I think we would be content actually making it to that age...
You’ve had a pretty epic summer, what’s been the highlight?
Our first festival show at Download was the start of something really amazing for us. This time last year, we were all working 9-5's and just doing Modestep in any spare time we had... That show was a real eye opener, we finally recognised we had a fanbase that knew our music and would make an effort to see us play! Other highlights would be at Pukkelpop festival in Belgium before the storm came, we played to 11,000 people... I counted about 5 different moshpits, I've never seen so many people going mental. Oh and our drummer Matt gave birth to a little baby goat, that was a pretty special moment too.
You host Modestep Radio every Sunday, tell us why we should tune in...
The radio show has been going just as long as we have been making tunes. It started off with 20 people and a server I had built out of an old computer. Now we're getting 20,000 odd people locking in every week... the format still hasn't changed. We interact with our fans, play exclusive dubstep tracks and act like complete morons. Highlights from the show include ex-member Oz stapling his nutsack to a piece of wood, live on air. You'll also get to hear all our tracks way before the public hear them, if you don't like nutsacks. www.modestepradio.co.uk
Introduce us to Max Modestep
Max is our cat. He also owns our record label, Max Records. He is extremely fond of bass and likes to fall asleep by our subwoofer when we're making noise. We always know if we're on to a hit if he falls asleep while we're playing it.
Describe your music in three words
Energetic, varied and catchy.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
Lauryn Hill, she's got a voice like no other.
Who’s your musical hero?
It's safe to say we're all very big fans of Stevie Wonder. From a production perspective, we're also HUGE fans of Todd 'The God' Edwards.
What’s been your best gig to date?
As mentioned in the highlights, it would have to be pukkelpop or download festival. Although Wireless festival would also be a strong contender too!
Do you ski or snowboard? Will you be getting involved while you’re at Freeze?!
I've never attempted it but a few of us used to skateboard when we were younger. I'm up for giving it a go, although chances are you will find one of us with a bottle of Dissarono at the top of the half-pipe singing 'Kissed by a Rose', soon after at the bottom of the half-pipe with our faces in the snow, crying.
What’s playing on your tour bus at the moment?
Weirdly enough a lot of old school garage seems to come out on our tour bus. I seem to recall a Heartless Crew mixtape being played at full volume recently. More often than not it's Michael Jackson, Earth Wind & Fire or other hits from the 80's.
Who are you looking forward to seeing at Freeze?
It'll be our first time seeing Dirtyphonics play, we're a huge fan of their production and apparently they put on a great live show. Highly recommend you see them play!
What does the future hold for Modestep?
By the time this goes out we will have (hopefully) finished our debut album, set for release early next year. Expect to see a couple more singles from us, more stupid videos on the internet and a ton more shows around the world. We're just keeping on at making music, performing and making tits of ourselves.
Any final words of wisdom for Freeze Fans?!
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
Here's the video for Modestep's latest single 'To The Stars', released on November 6th, to get you in mood!
